Google Analytics Secrets – Reducing Bounce Rates

leave a comment

Google new Website Optimizer, is a great tool that helps in improving your conversion rates.

Work on your landing pages. Improve your headlines, make them attractive enough to click. Call to action on your page, click here, download etc.

Try different designs by moving your sections here and there. Run the test for two weeks. Find out which page is performing well. Take action by moving the page into the best performing design or layout.

Tips to Improve Reduce Bounce Rates
Most visitors land on your home page. Therefore the content for the “keywords” that drive maxim visitors must be shown right at the top. The reason being if visitors don’t see the content they searched for, they’ll quit the page.

Showcase Related Content
The next thing you must do is show highly related content very prominently on the page.
Example: If you have high bounce on a “how to improve trust in relationships”, then the related content like Communicating Openly, Art of Listening, 10 Ways to Connect to People you Love must be prominently showcased. Related videos, downloads, audio files, shopping items can also be shown at the end of article.

Where do your visitors come from
Find out from where these visitors are coming. That should give you a fair idea of bounce rates.
Good content means low bounce. Write good content. Give what users want. Give more of it and they’ll stick to site.

Build a sticky site
Use sticky elements like free giveaways, feeds, free newsletters, features like polls, comments, downloads, contests to keep and grow your visitors.

Google Analytics Secrets – Understanding What Content Visitors Want

leave a comment

Analytics is a great tool to understand your users, analyze traffic behavior and improve your traffic and page rank. Let’s look inside Google Analytics and learn about your content.

The analytics dashboard shows you the traffic for each day. It gives you the number of visitors, time spent per user, no of pages seen per user.

But there’s much more the numbers reveal!
For example, check your “Top Content” in Content Overview. This reveals the top hit pages and gives you the “keywords” used by the users to land on this page. This is an important thing to note.

Tip: You must capitalize on the keywords information of the “most read” pages, by creating more pages on the same subject. And optimizing them with the sprinkling of keywords used by your visitors. This gives visitors more quality content on the same subject leading to more pages being browsed by visitors.

Apart from this, Google Analytics also reveals a ton of information about how users landed on this page, which page did they read next. This gives information about what users are looking for. And helps you create content that keeps on site for long. This also shows what users look for next when they navigate your pages. Study them and implement navigation accordingly where visitors can go through related content with ease.

The source of each of your top content is also revealed in Google Analytics. This helps you tailor make your content, keeping in mind the needs of those countries’ users. And later orient your marketing strategies accordingly.

Find out the previous pages they visited and showcase a list of “next pages visited”, since that’s related content for users as their behavior shows on your site or blog.

The “Top exit pages” need to be carefully analyzed. Where did visitors come from, where did they navigate to and which page did they exit from. Find reasons why they went away – did they get what they wanted or they didn’t find what they were looking for. Were related articles not showcased on these pages. Then work on your findings. Build more content to keep visitors on site.

The “site overlay” shows the percentage of clicks on each of the links shown on the site home page. This helps you understand how a visitors sees and behaves on your home page.

Analyzing your content and implementing more quality content and showing related content helps visitors to find content they want and keeps them on site longer.

Dynamic URls Vs Static Content – Google Indexes Best

leave a comment

Why Google Search Engine handles dynamic content best. Google recently announced that it can take care of Dynamic Content and webmasters need not worry about rewriting dynamic urls to shorter static urls.

This is a significant improvement in Google Search advancements. ecommerce, job, shopping sites amongst others serve users varied content depending upon the search parameters (location, price, brand, category etc).

Dynamic content is content created on the fly, such as when a user searches on a ticketing site, for a low cost ticket to LA, it searches the database of information and throws up best results. These results are not actually available as static html page content anywhere on site.

Earlier site owners and webmasters had a tough time getting these indexed. They would resort to creation of thousands of static pages or rewriting their urls using modrewrite softwares. Now, Google’s ability to crawl and handle dynamic content is a boon to webmasters and users.

Should I then redo all static urls
No. Don’t be confused by this announcement. Google SEO team only means to say that Google algorithms can handle changing content much better than before. The existing static urls created on sites with dynamic content should just let it be there. Google will still crawl, index and show them in relevant search results. That’s not a disadvantage at all.

Yahoo though still recommends a different method for authenticated site users.
Yahoo Dynamic Content Rules Though I don’t recommend that.

Blogger’s guide to accepting comments on blogs – SEO Tips

leave a comment

Many of you may not be aware that spammers tend to post comments using softwares. With preloaded messages and invalid mail ids, they post random messages on hundreds of blogs and hope people click on them and land up on their illegal site. Many bloggers accept all comments on their blogs without knowing that search engines penalize you for posting spammy comments or irrevelant comments from spammy sites.

Use comment spam services like Askimet. Otherwise the best thing to do:

1.      Moderate all comments to your blog

2.      Read through the messages and post only those that seem genuine

3.      It’s preferred to have comments only from those who sign in

4.      Allow those who don’t want to sign in to post comments, but choose only those that add value to your blog or provide readers with more information

5.      It’s preferred not to accept those who post nothing useful but leave their signatures

6.      It’s best to check the site of any spammy looking comment and find out what the site is offering before accepting the coment.

What’s good about comments on your blog?

1.      They provide user generated content

2.      They tell you how useful your blog content is

3.      They also let you connect to those with similar blogs or sites and exchange links

4.      They help you connect to folks with similar likes

How do search engines look at comments to value your blog?

1.      Search engines take comments as an indication of your blog’s likeability

2.      They count it as a vote for your blog post

It’s not equal to a link but certainly has value

Google’s new keyword tool for great Search Engine Optimization

leave a comment

Didn’t know how to get the right keywords for SEO of your site or blog, well that got easier with <a href=”http://google.com/sktool/”>New Google Search Tool</a>

It generates specific and relevant keywords that matches your site’s content. Primarily intended for those using Google Adwords, to help them find highly relevant keywords for bidding.

But it can be used by you to find highly searched keywords that are best suited to your blog or site. And also zero in on highly paid keywords, in case you’re using adsense.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a Google Adwords account, you can still use this tool to generate keywords, albeit in a limited way. On the left are generic categories and you can drill down to find out relevant categories for your site. And then find great keywords.

Alternatively, you can enter competitive site’s name and look for keywords that match a competitor. This can help you build better content that users are actually searching for.

Blog to make money online - Easy Step by Step Guide

one comment

Guide to help you blog & make money blogging online. Find how to choose Blog platform, domain name, money making ideas, content, marketing, social media etc.

I decided to simplify things about making money online blogging and offer practical tips to implement on blogs. Since there’s so much of hype and overload about making money blogging, I decided to cut through the clutter and write from my own experience.

Is it true that people are making money publishing blogs?

Yes, there are many fulltime bloggers earning big dollars like Dareen Rose of Problogger.com. And there are millions of not so serious blogs that make a fair bit of money. This gives you hope and confidence.

How should I start a blog?

Common sense tells that the first step to publishing a blog is to analyze a few things about yourself.

What are your aims in publishing a blog?

Anything we do must have a clear goal. Do you want to begin a new hobby. Want to make dollars to add to your regular earnings. Are you keen to share your knowledge in something or expertise in some area. Are you exploring a money making opportunity to quit your daytime job a few years from now. Want to build authority on a subject as a subject matter expert.

How much time do you have for blogging?

This is a very important question to answer. A few minutes a day or an hour a day. Since there’s going to be a fair bit of hard work.

Are you willing to learn?

If you’re keen to set up a blog and make money online, then you must be prepared to learn quite a bit – how to choose a theme to blog, promoting your blog, posting regularly, which platform to use – blogger, wordpress, type pad etc; use of social media, understanding what your readers want, researching, using analytics, choosing revenue programs like adsense, kontera, chitika, affiliate programs; and more.

How to select a topic for your blog?

This is very important, friends. Are you a gardening enthusiast, a stamp collector, a techie, an astrology buff, a basketball player, a person interested in helping others, an environmentalist, someone who has a lot of stories to say, a bike and car crazy guy? Then you have a chance of converting your passion into a blog. And of course make money through blogs.

Do some research to find what your audience wants?

Many bloggers jump into a theme only to find results not coming in fast, or run out of themes very soon, besides running out of steam. To avoid that, after you have chosen a theme – say hybrid cars, find out what’s there on the net on the subject. Use some of Google’s cool tools for webmasters like Insights. http://www.google.com/insights/search/#

This useful keyword trend tool provides a glimpse of what people might be searching for on your topic. This gives a trend by region, time frame and content category.

The Google Keyword Tool

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal allows you to find out alternate keyword phrases for your topic and the amount of advertising competition for the same. Find out more about your topic’s need in the market.

Search on major engines like Google, yahoo or MSN for latest reports on your topic. You’ll discover the potential of the market.

Can you make money out of your theme?

You need to be very careful here. Explore the revenue potential of your theme before setting up the blog. The Google Keyword Tool gives an indication of advertiser interest and prospective services around your are of interest. Search your topic on Google, Yahoo and MSN and see if there are many sponsored results and ads on the search results page.

Alternatively, you could check 10 to 20 sites that come up while searching for information on your blog theme. Browse through and find out what the sites offer – ads of various services and products; affiliate programs, ebooks, products etc. This will give you the hope and confidence to make money blogging on that subject.

How to Choose a name for your blog?

This is very important, as important as choosing a name for your child. Smart internet marketing is about choosing a name that’s familiar with people (I mean a word already top of mind). Keep it small. The best keyword for your blog should form part of your domain name. Example: shopping.com. gadgetgifts.com. horoscopes.com, technews.com, guitarlessons.com etc.

Note: I suggest you get your own domain name (costs about $10 a year), rather than have a .wordpress or .blogspot.com.

What domain extensions to select?

.com; .net; .org; or .us (or whichever country you target the blog for)

Which blogging platform should I chose?

Wordpress, blogger, typepad, moveabletype are popular blogging platforms. Blogger’s drag and drop is easier for those who don’t know even a bit of html or don’t want to learn basic code. The rest need a little bit of learning. But, believe me it can be learnt in a few weeks.

Ready with blogging platform! What next?

Use the two tools suggested above, research what people want on the net and begin to write. You must write atleast 300 words per blog post. The odd one if it’s a recommendation of another site, product or service can be 100 words too. But your regular posts must be of good quality and about 300 words.

Write atleast 10 posts before you publish your blog. And then keep writing regularly. Initially, one post a week is fine. And you can build on it later.

How to write an SEO-friendly title for your blog?

Choose the most important keyword phrases for your blog and write the title. The title is very important as it informs readers and search engines what the blog is about. So it must be your key element.

For example: CNN’s title:

CNN.com - Breaking News, U.S., World, Weather, Entertainment …

Gifts.com’s title: Gift Ideas: Christmas Gifts, Gift Baskets, Gift Cards, Wedding Gifts

See how clearly they indicate what the site is about.

How to write a Search Engine Friendly Description while blogging?

When you type a search, the first line you see for any site is the title. The next two lines are its description. Readers tend to read the title and description, while deciding whether to open the site or not? So writing a description that fits the blog is very important. Infact, you must spend as much quality time as possible to write titles and descriptions that attract. Using keywords that people tend to search with for information on your site is critical from the search engine point of view.

Here are some examples of titles and descriptions that fit the content of the site.

Description for Walmart.: Shop Walmart Online for Low Prices on Top Brands in Computers, TVs, Toys, GPS, Video Games, DVDs, Music, Apparel, Housewares, iPod, Photo, Grocery, …

Description for Amazon.com:

+Description: Online retailer of books, video games, toys, music, and video recordings. Region 1 DVDs and prices in US dollars.

Description for JC Penney:

Provides a variety of apparel for the whole family, jewelry, housewares and home decor, and shoes. Includes a gift registry, employment and credit card …

www.jcpenney.com/

Now, just go ahead and set up your blog. Publish posts regularly. Link up to bloggers you know. Submit your site to the search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL and ASK. And slowly you’ll see traffic picking up. Good Luck.

Blog Design Tips for great Search Engine Optimization

leave a comment

Many bloggers don’t pay enough attention to blog designs while blogging. In actuality, design of blogs is very important for the blogs success. Here’s a blogger’s guide to SEO friendly blog design.

By design I mean the organization of your blog pages. How should one organize content, images, video, categories etc to make it look pleasing to the eye? And eventually to make it easy and intuitive for blog users to navigate and read what they want.

First take stock of what you want on the blog home: main content, recent posts, recommended blogs, search bar, contact us, sign up for newsletter, subscribe to feed, site map and more. Then think about what users would like to see on your blog and what would readers do when they land on your blog home page.

Depending on what users are most likely to do, you decide on your right, left, top or bottom navigation. Get the most important things right up at the top – recent posts, categories, search bar, about, contact us, downloads, feeds/ subscribe to newsletter etc.

Choosing the template themes
Depending on the topic of your bloging, choose the theme. If it’s serious, get themes that are neat. If you’re blogging about products, travel or gadgets, then you get a flashy, colorful blog theme.

Touching the code
If you don’t know html, I suggest that you don’t tinker with the code. Use what’s there in a theme that suits you best. In case you’re using blogger.com, use drag and drop.

Creating a blog that’s pleasing to the eye
Just ask yourself. Would I stay on a blog for long it’s hard on my eyes? Will I close a page, if it’s not aesthetically good. Most blog readers will bounce off if there’s clutter on a blog. So keep it easy on the eye. But use images to enhance the beauty.

Test and tweak after a while
Google analytics will provide you some clues to how people actually navigate through the blog home page. The map overlay will tell you what content they are seeing the most. You can them rearrange content according to your analysis.

I keep repeating, search engines like Google only want to give it’s users the best sites. And keep sending more traffic to sites that users love, read lot of pages, spend more time on, frequent and recommend to others. Therefore, make user feel comfortable, quickly give them what they want – quality content and you’ll succeed as a blogger.

And that’s why a well designed blog that users love becomes Search Engine friendly.
